Remove AI metadata from a photo

Scan your own image for free to see exactly which AI tags it carries, then strip them with a Quick clean. Creator and copyright fields stay in the file. Free 3 times a day.

  • Originals deleted 24 h after your last run finishes, or after upload if you never process (up to 72 h while awaiting payment)
  • Never used for training
  • Credits back on failure

What AI metadata is

AI metadata is information stored in the image file, not in the picture. The most visible kind is C2PA Content Credentials, a signed record of who made the image and how it was edited. It lives in a separate block of the file, so it is not part of the pixels.

Other fields do similar jobs. XMP and IPTC tags can say an image is AI-generated or AI-edited. EXIF and PNG text chunks written by some generators can hold the model name, the settings and sometimes the prompt. Each of these is a field a tool can read, and a field a tool can remove.

Why people clean it

There are ordinary reasons. A prompt stored in a file is private information you may not want to hand over with a picture. A photo you mostly shot yourself can pick up an AI tag from one generative edit in an editing tool, and you may want to know that before you send it on. A client delivery may need a clean file with your own credit and no generator fields.

The scan is useful even if you never clean anything. It lists each tag it finds, so you can see what the file says about itself before anyone else reads it.

What we remove and what we keep

A blunt tool that wipes every field also wipes the creator name and the copyright notice. We take out AI provenance fields only. Creator and copyright fields stay by default. If a Content Credential carries author values, the credential is removed and those values are carried into the standard fields.

Quick clean is free 3 times a day on the web, with output up to 12 MP. Larger images are downscaled to 12 MP unless you pay 2 credits for original size. You can download the result and drop it back into the scan to see what is left.

What metadata cleaning cannot do

Some generators also write a watermark into the pixels, and removing metadata does not touch it. SynthID is the best-known example. We cannot decode these marks, so the report only says a hidden watermark is likely when the metadata names a generator known to use one.

Cleaning metadata also does not make an image look human-made to classifiers, which judge the picture itself. And it does not end your duty to label AI content where a law or a platform requires it. Our SynthID page covers the pixel layer.

How it works

Four steps. The first is free.

  1. 1

    Drop your image

PNG, JPG, WebP or AVIF, up to 25 MP. You can scan without an account.

  2. 2

    Read the tags

The report lists C2PA Content Credentials, AI source tags and generator fields it found, and what each says.

  3. 3

    Run a Quick clean

Strips AI provenance fields and keeps creator and copyright. Free, 3 a day.

  4. 4

    Check the result

Download the new file and scan it again. The report shows which tags are gone and which fields stayed.

Honest limits

What it does, and what it does not.

Read this before you pay for anything.

  • Lists every AI tag and C2PA record the file carries
  • Strips AI provenance metadata and keeps creator and copyright fields
  • Carries author values from a removed Content Credential into the standard fields
  • Lets you scan the cleaned file again to see what is left
  • Deletes your original 24 hours after the last run on it finishes, and never uses images for training
  • Change hidden watermarks in the pixels. Metadata cleaning leaves them as they are
  • Stop classifiers from recognising an image as AI, or prove it is human-made
  • Edit video or documents. It is images only for now
  • Remove stock, marketplace or third-party marks, or work on images you do not own
  • End your duty to label AI content where a law or a platform requires it

FAQ

Questions

What is AI metadata?

Information stored in the image file rather than in the picture: C2PA Content Credentials, XMP and IPTC tags that say an image is AI-generated or AI-edited, and generator fields in EXIF or PNG text chunks such as the model, settings or prompt.

Is C2PA stored in the pixels?

No. C2PA Content Credentials are a signed record in a separate block of the file. Because the record is metadata, it can be removed, which is also why it is easy to lose when a file is re-saved.

Does removing AI metadata stop an image being recognised as AI?

No. Hidden pixel watermarks stay, and classifiers judge the picture itself. We never claim a cleaned image cannot be recognised as AI.

Will you keep my copyright and creator fields?

Yes, by default. We strip AI provenance fields only. If a Content Credential carries author values, the credential is removed and those values are carried into the standard fields.

Is it free?

The scan is always free. Quick clean is free up to 3 times a day on the web, with output up to 12 MP. Original size above 12 MP, the GPU pass and the API use credits.

Does a screenshot or a re-save remove the metadata?

Often, but not reliably, and it also changes your picture. The scan shows what is in the file you have, so you can check instead of guessing.

Why does my photo show AI tags when I only retouched it?

Some editing tools write an AI tag when a generative feature was used, even on a small edit. The report lists each tag it finds and where it came from, so you can see what the file says.

Which files work?

PNG, JPG, WebP and AVIF. HEIC is not supported yet.

Is this allowed?

Use it on images you made or have the right to edit, and you confirm that before each clean. Some places, including the EU, China and India, require AI-generated content to be labelled in certain cases, and removing metadata does not remove that duty. The service is not available in mainland China, and in India only the free scan is offered.

What happens to my image?

Files are processed on our servers, not in your browser. Originals are deleted 24 hours after the last run on them finishes, or after upload if you never process. We never use images for training.
